Shemuscle Turns Five Today

Although I launched Shemuscle in 2004, the journey began eight years before, in September of 1996. That is when I got the crazy idea that I wanted to start photographing the women around me [I owned Better Bodies gym in NYC] with my shitty point and shoot Olympus camera. I didn’t know an f stop from bus stop.

No problem i thought, I will just set the camera to “Auto”. But why would any woman in her right mind have trusted me to take a cool photo of them? So you see, the real thanks goes to the women that somehow believed in my vision before i could even show them what that vision was. Women like Sharon Bruneau, Errica Kern, Kathy Johansson, Sherilyn Godreau, Timea Majorova. They were all my “first”. I salute you. I stand on your shoulders [um, so to speak]

The photographs i have posted here are scans of my actual prints [yeah, no digital back then] from those very first shoots.
