Early Shoots, Cool Polaroids

After writing my Shemuscle birthday post, it got me thinking about my very first muscle girl shoots. I dug into my archives to see what I could find, so watch for a few posts about this. Today I scanned a few polaroids i took during those very first shoots. The one of Sharon was taken in 1997 and Timea was taken in 1998.

I’ve always loved polaroids, and from time to time I pull out my old SX-70 during a shoot and play around. But, as many of you know, Polaroid stopped producing its instant film and my stash is dwindling. The blessing and the curse of the digital age.

It’s hard to believe, but it was eleven years ago today, that i got my first commission as a photographer by Joe Weider. Muscle & Fitness had seen some of my photos from earlier shoots I had done with Sharon Bruneau and Ericca Kern in motel rooms. So they asked if I would travel to the Arnold Classic in Ohio and shoot the top fitness women, the same way, black & white in their hotel rooms. I photographed some amazing women that weekend, Susan Curry, Lena Johannesen, Minna Lessig, Timea Majorova, Ericca Kern, just to name a few. The photo above is from that weekend. My photo’s from that weekend ran in a large photo feature called “Behind Closed Doors”. I was then offered a contract to shoot for Muscle & Fitness exclusively for the next six years. When Joe sold his company to AMI, my contract was not renewed. Oh well.
