During the summer of 1982 I was hard at work trying to build my gym, Better Bodies, in hopes of opening that September. My partner, Mike Alalof, had met a local girl who was working as a trainer at a local health spa in midtown Manhattan. He thought she would be a great first hire for us, as we needed a female trainer. After all how could we live up to our radical tag line “Better Bodies, Manhattan’s First Serious Bodybuilding Gym for Women” if we didn’t have a woman on staff?. Nobody had ever welcomed women into a hardcore environment the way we were about to. It sounds quaint now, but it was virtually unheard of in 1982. Mike had her stop by one afternoon, and that was it, none of us ever looked back. She picked up a paint brush and jumped right in. Her name was Gladys Portugues.
If you are not familiar with Gladys, you should be. Who could have known the heights that she would climb from such a simple start. In a matter of just a few years she was a superstar in the nascent sport of women’s bodybuilding. In fact, in 1985, she graced the cover of Muscle & Fitness, Shape and Flex magazines. Incredible. That has never been done since, and never will. Together we were active participants in the heady days of women’s bodybuilding. Perhaps, never quite aware at the time of the importance of many of those moments. How I wish I had a video of Gladys guest posing, as an amateur, at George Snyder’s 1983 Ms. Olympia. She performed with three break dancers, no one had ever seen those two worlds come together before. In just one year from that night, she would be in the Ms Olympia, and take home an impressive 7th place.
I have spent over half of my life in the world of women and weights. My perspective is unique, one not shared by many. I now realize that it was those early years that helped formulate me as a relevant photographer today. I am now over a decade removed from being a gym owner. The deeper I get into my “new” life as a photographer the more I realize that my “old” life as a gym owner is what created my point of view as a photographer.
I have begun to explore my archive of photographs and video’s from my early years as a gym owner. As I uncover moments from these early days, whether from an old vhs tape, snapshots, polaroids or flyers, I will post them here on Shemuscle, finally, connecting the dots.

I miss Kathy Unger. I met Kathy in the late 80′s. She was a local bodybuilder with amazing potential. Kathy won her Pro card in 1989, and her first Pro show was the Ms International, which was held at the Arnold Classic. Kathy took 8th place and Tonya Knight won the show [where is Tonya?]. Every so often Kathy and her husband Jerry came to Better Bodies to train. In 1991 I wanted to put together a Better Bodies commercial for local TV. This video is the result. This footage has never been seen. Kathy where are you?

“Kristia, mark my words…..”

Nine years ago I got a letter from from an aspiring fitness model by the name of Kristia Knowles. She was going to be visiting New York City with her mom, and asked if she could stop by my studio to introduce herself. When she walked in the door, her beauty was apparent, but when she took her jacket off, her future was obvious.I remember telling her after seeing her physique, “Mark my words….” that she would be on the cover of Muscle & Fitness within the next twelve months, I think she was on two covers in the next twelve months, with countless others to follow. But the one thing that I will never forget about Kristia was her thoughtfulness. I had cast her in a large production shoot for Muscle & Fitness, a feature called “Tar Beach”. At the end of a long day of shooting on a hot new york building roof top, the other models had already scattered, but Kristia saw that my crew and I had to break down the set. She asked if she could help, and proceeded to clean up the set. No model has ever done that. That is Kristia Knowles.

This video is a segment that ran on “PM Magazine” in 1985. This was the first-ever “magazine-format” TV program. The segment featured the modeling agency I created to market muscular physiques in the early 1980′s. There is some great footage of Gladys Portugues and Carla Dunlap posing at a party I threw with Chi Chi Valente at the Limelight, in NYC. Watching them pose without the oppressive constraints of a competition posing routine, you can really appreciate their genius. I have raw footage of the whole show too, which I will post at a later date. Enjoy.

“Girls on Film” Circa 1985

A few weeks ago, I uncovered an old VHS tape [remember VHS?] that I produced around 1985. The opening segment was a four minute “music video” that I put together to introduce the advertising world to Gladys Portugues [often referred to as a "reel"]. MTV had just launched a few years earlier, so I guess that is what influenced me. The point I was trying to make was that as women’s bodies began to change and get more muscular through serious weight training, advertisers would need to take note, and reflect that. Enter: Gladys. Excuse the quality, but it is a 25 year old VHS that has been converted to digital. You may need to pause it to let it preload…
